Description
Zyprexa Zydis (olanzapine) is an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder.
Zyprexa Zydis is available in 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg orally disintegrating tablets.
Directions
Take Zyprexa Zydis exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your doctor or pharmacy.
Zyprexa Zydis dosage:
Your doctor will tell you how much Zyprexa Zydis you should take based on your age and the condition being treated. Patients generally take the medication by mouth once daily.
Zyprexa Zydis should be placed in the mouth where it will dissolve quickly.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Zyprexa Zydis is olanzapine. The inactive ingredients include gelatin, mannitol, aspartame, sodium methyl paraben, and sodium propyl paraben.
Contraindications
According to the Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications, or reasons why a person is unable to take Zyprexa when taking it by itself. However, when using Zyprexa in combination with fluoxetine (Symbyax®), lithium, or valproate, the Contraindications sections of those products should be reviewed.
Cautions
- Zyprexa Zydis contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
- Elderly patients who have dementia-related psychosis and are taking antipsychotic medications are at increased risk of death. Zyprexa is not indicated to treat patients with dementia-related psychosis.
- When taking Zyprexa and fluoxetine, the Boxed Warning section for Symbyax should be reviewed.
- Before you start taking Zyprexa Zydis, talk to your doctor about:
- All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Your allergies
- Your current health conditions and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- The risk of cerebrovascular events (e.g., stroke) is increased in elderly patients who have dementia-related psychosis and are taking antipsychotics.
- Suicidal attempts are possible in patients with schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder; therefore, high-risk patients should be closely monitored while taking Zyprexa Zydis. The Boxed Warning and Warnings and Precautions sections should be reviewed when taking Zyprexa in combination with fluoxetine.
- Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome and Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms can occur.
- High blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol or lipid (fat) levels, and weight gain can occur.
- Tardive dyskinesia can occur. Zyprexa Zydis should be discontinued if clinically necessary.
- Severe low blood pressure that can cause dizziness, rapid heart rate, slow heart rate, and fainting can occur. Caution should be exercised in patients with cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, or any other condition that can affect blood pressure.
- Abnormal white blood cell counts can occur.
- Patients with seizures or other conditions that can cause seizures should use Zyprexa Zydis with caution.
- Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Zyprexa Zydis affects you, as the medication can affect judgment, thinking, and motor skills.
- Patients with urinary retention, prostatic hypertrophy, constipation, paralytic ileus, or other related conditions should use Zyprexa Zydis with caution.
- Prolactin levels may increase with Zyprexa Zydis use.
- Fasting blood glucose and lipid levels should be checked at the start of and during treatment.
Side Effects
Zyprexa Zydis side effects include low blood pressure, constipation, weight gain, dizziness, personality disorder, movement problems, sedation, headache, abdominal pain, pain in the extremities, fatigue, dry mouth, tremor, and weakness; however, other side effects may also occur. Inform your doctor of any side effects that bother you or won't go away.
