Description
Zofran ODT (ondansetron) is an orally-disintegrating medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or procedures.
Zofran ODT is available in 4 mg and 8 mg strengths.
Directions
Take Zofran ODT exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you have about the medication.
Zofran ODT dosage: Your doctor will tell you how much Zofran ODT you should take and when to take it.
The Zofran ODT tablet should be placed on top of the tongue where it will quickly dissolve. Water is not needed to dissolve or swallow the tablet.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Zofran ODT is ondansetron. Inactive ingredients include aspartame, gelatin, mannitol, methylparaben sodium, propylparaben sodium, and strawberry flavor.
Contraindications
Patients with an allergy to ondansetron or to any of the other ingredients in Zofran ODT should not take the medication.
In addition, Zofran ODT should not be given with apomorphine.
Cautions
- Before you begin taking Zofran ODT, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Zofran ODT can cause allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and trouble breathing. Seek emergency care right away if you have trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue, lips, or face, a rapid heart rate, a rash, or any other sign or symptom of an allergic reaction.
- Zofran ODT can cause QT prolongation, which is an abnormal heart rhythm. Patients with congenital long QT syndrome should not take the medication. Monitoring should occur in patients with electrolyte abnormalities, heart failure or arrhythmias, or taking other medications that can prolong the QT interval.
- Zofran ODT can cause serotonin syndrome, especially when taken with other medications that can cause it. Signs and symptoms may include mental status changes, blood pressure fluctuations, increased heart rate, dizziness, sweating, tremor, incoordination, seizures, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Seek medical care right away if you experience any of these reactions.
- Zofran ODT can mask progressive ileus and/or gastric distention after abdominal surgery or chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Patients should be monitored for decreased bowel activity, especially if they are at risk for gastrointestinal obstruction.
- Zofran ODT tablets contain phenylalanine.
Side Effects
Headache, tiredness, constipation, and diarrhea are common Zofran ODT side effects; however, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
