Directions
Xolair should be administered as directed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor about any questions or concerns you may have.
Your doctor will tell you how much and how often you should receive Xolair injections, depending on the condition being treated.
Ingredients
Omalizumab is the active ingredient contained in Xolair injection.
Contraindications
Xolair should not be administered to patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Cautions
Xolair contains an FDA Boxed Warning regarding the occurrence of anaphylaxis, a serious reaction that can cause tightening of the airway muscles, low blood pressure, fainting, hives, and/or swelling of the tongue or throat. Xolair treatment should be started in a healthcare setting where patients can be observed after its administration and anaphylaxis can be managed if it occurs. Patients should immediately seek emergency care if they develop symptoms of a serious reaction.
- Before you start treatment with Xolair, tell your doctor about:
- All the medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your health conditions and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Malignancies have been reported in patients treated with Xolair.
- Xolair should not be used to treat an asthma attack or sudden breathing problems.
- Corticosteroids should not be abruptly stopped upon starting treatment with Xolair; they should be gradually decreased.
- Xolair can cause eosinophilic conditions. Patients should seek care if they experience a rash, pulmonary problems, heart problems, and/or nerve problems like nerve pain.
- Xolair should be stopped if patients experience a fever, joint pain, and rash.
Side Effects
Xolair–like any medication–can cause side effects. The most common include–but are not limited to–joint pain, general pain, leg pain, fatigue, dizziness, fracture, arm pain, fever, skin problems, earache, headache, stomach pain, nose bleed, injection site reaction, nausea, common cold, sinus inflammation, upper respiratory tract infection, and cough. Contact your doctor right away if you develop bothersome or persistent side effects.
