Description
Vocabria (cabotegravir) is a medication used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients who are at least 12 years old and weigh 35 kg (77 lbs) or more.
Vocabria is also used to prevent exposure to HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents who weigh 35 kg (77 lbs) or more and are at risk for HIV-1 infection.
Vocabria is available in a 30 mg tablet for oral administration.

Take Vocabria exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns can be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.
Your doctor will tell you how much Vocabria you should take and for how long you should take it. The typical dose is one tablet (Vocabria 30 mg) by mouth once daily with a meal. Your doctor may instruct you to take Vocabria with Edurant, another medication used to treat HIV-1.
Ingredients
Cabotegravir is the active ingredient in Vocabria. Inactive ingredients include hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and sodium starch glycolate. The film-coating of the tablet contains hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, and titanium dioxide.
Contraindications
Do not take Vocabria if you are allergic to cabotegravir.
Do not take Vocabria with carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, or rifapentine. Ask your doctor if you are unsure whether or not you take any of these medications.
Do not take Vocabria if you are HIV-1 positive for HIV-1 PrEP.
Cautions
- Before you start therapy with Vocabria, tell your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health conditions and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- The use of Vocabria for HIV-1 PrEP should be part of comprehensive management to decrease the risk of acquiring HIV-1 infection.
- Serious allergic reactions may occur with the use of Vocabria. Patients should seek emergency care right away if they develop symptoms of an allergic reaction.
- Vocabria may cause liver problems.
- Vocabria may cause mood changes, including depression.
Side Effects
Common Vocabria side effects include fatigue, headache, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, abnormal dreams, anxiety, problems sleeping, abdominal discomfort, abdominal distension, weakness, upper respiratory tract infection, sleepiness, and stomach pain. However, these are not all the side effects that can occur. Call your doctor right away if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
