Description
Visanne is a prescription medication used for the long-term treatment of endometriosis in patients who’ve had their first menstrual cycle and are 12 years of age and older.
Visanne comes in 2 mg tablets for oral administration and is dispensed in 28-day packs.
Directions
Take the Visanne pill exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Carefully read the information leaflet that comes with your prescription. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have about the medication.
Recommended dosing: Start Visanne on day 1 of your menstrual cycle. Take one tablet by mouth once daily at the same time each day. When the pack is finished, the next one should be started without interruption.
Store Visanne at or below 30°C (86°F) and away from children’s reach.
Ingredients
Each tablet contains 2 mg of dienogest. Each tablet also contains 63 mg of lactose monohydrate.
Contraindications
Patients with any of the following should not take Visanne:
- Have had or currently have a blood clotting problem
- Have had or currently have arterial and cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack, stroke, or ischemic heart disease
- Diabetes involving the vascular
- Have had or currently have severe liver disease
- Have had or currently have liver tumors (benign or cancerous)
- Have or suspect cancer that is dependent on sex hormones
- Vaginal bleeding that is not diagnosed
- An allergy to any of the ingredients or excipients in the medication
Cautions
- Before you start taking Visanne, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Visanne may increase the risk of blood clots.
- Visanne may increase the risk of breast cancer.
- Visanne may decrease bone mineral density.
- Patients who have had depression should be carefully monitored during treatment with Visanne. The medication should be stopped if severe depression occurs.
- Visanne may need to be stopped if patients experience high blood pressure.
- Visanne should be stopped if patients experience cholestatic jaundice and/or itchiness that has occurred during the first pregnancy or with prior use of sex steroids.
- Women with diabetes should be carefully monitored during treatment with Visanne, as it may affect insulin resistance and glucose tolerance.
- Women who take progestogen-only medications are more likely to have ectopic pregnancies compared to women who take combined oral contraceptives. The benefits and risks of taking Visanne should be carefully weighed in women with a history of extra-uterine pregnancy or tube function impairment.
- For pregnancy prevention, patients are recommended to use hormone-free birth control methods such as barrier contraception or a condom.
- Chloasma, a pigmentation disorder of the skin that causes brown patches, may occur, especially in women who have experienced chloasma. These patients are advised to avoid sun exposure and UV radiation during treatment with Visanne.
- Functional ovarian cyst may occur.
- Lactose monohydrate is contained in each Visanne tablet; therefore, patients who have rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption who are on a diet free of lactose should consider the amount in Visanne.
Side Effects
Weight changes, mood changes, sleep problems, loss of libido, headache, nausea, stomach pain, acne, hair loss, back pain, breast discomfort, and vaginal bleeding are some Visanne side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
