Contraindications
Avoid taking or using this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to Vesanoid, any of its components, or other retinoids.
Cautions
- Before beginning treatment with Vesanoid, it's important to discuss the following with your healthcare provider:
- Your current health conditions
- Any allergies you may have
- All medications you are currently using
- Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Vesanoid can cause significant harm to an unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use two effective forms of contraception during treatment and for one month after the last dose. Men should use effective contraception during and for one week after treatment.
- Differentiation syndrome is a life-threatening condition that has occurred in some patients, often within the first month of treatment. Symptoms include fever, weight gain, and respiratory distress. If you notice these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
- If you have a high white blood cell count, Vesanoid might worsen this condition. Your doctor might give you chemotherapy alongside Vesanoid to manage this risk.
- Vesanoid can cause increased pressure in the brain, especially in children. Symptoms like headache, nausea, and vision problems need immediate medical evaluation.
- Since Vesanoid can increase cholesterol and triglycerides, regular monitoring of these levels is advised during treatment.
- Liver function should be tested before and during treatment as Vesanoid can cause liver enzyme elevations. If significant liver abnormalities are found, treatment may need to be adjusted.
- Vesanoid may increase the risk of blood clots, leading to stroke or heart attack. It's important to monitor for signs of such events, especially during the first month of treatment.
Side Effects
Vesanoid may lead to side effects like headaches, fever, bone pain, and malaise. Some people might also experience skin and mucous membrane dryness, respiratory issues like dyspnea, and various gastrointestinal discomforts including nausea and vomiting. These side effects are generally part of the body's response to the medication and can vary in intensity.
Serious side effects include differentiation syndrome, which involves fever and respiratory distress, and leukocytosis, where white blood cell counts are abnormally high. Vesanoid may also cause intracranial high blood pressure, significant liver issues (hepatotoxicity), and risky blood clots (thromboembolic events). If experiencing severe side effects like unmanageable pain, severe abdominal discomfort, or changes in mental status, it's important to seek immediate medical attention.
