Description
Velphoro is a medication that addresses calcium deficiencies in the blood as a result of elevated phosphate levels that are the cause of hypocalcemia and chronic kidney disease. This chewable kidney dialysis medication can be eaten with meals or snacks and is usually taken as 1-chewable per meal, although your physician may change that number for you.
Velphoro is a standard medication for people undergoing kidney dialysis and is most effective when patients also reduce phosphorous-rich foods in their diet. Dietary changes can enhance the effectiveness of chronic kidney disease treatment, and the baseline for that is to have a serum phosphorous level of 5.5 mg/dL.
Directions
Have one Velphoro chewable tablet before, during, or after eating a meal or snack. Your tablet has to be crushed or chewed before eating it, and it is important to not swallow the tablet whole without with crushing it up first or chewing it well before swallowing it.
Do not concern if you forget to take Velphoro before, during, or after a meal. You do not need to take a make-up dose, and instead just take your next tablet at your next snack or meal. Taking Velphoro without food or snack means the medication will not be ineffective. Always take with a meal or snack.
