What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Ingredients

    The active ingredient in Triesence is triamcinolone acetonide.

    Contraindications

    Patients with systemic fungal infections, infections associated with the eye, or an allergy to triamcinolone or any other ingredient in the medication should not receive Triesence injection.

    Cautions

    • Before you receive Triesence, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use, including eye drops or eye ointments
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Triesence contains the following warnings and precautions:
      • Cataracts, infections, glaucoma, or other effects of the eye
      • Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, Cushing’s syndrome, and high blood glucose
      • Susceptibility to infection is increased and risk of worsening, spreading, or reactivation of latent infection is increased
      • High blood pressure, salt and water retention, and low potassium levels in the blood
      • Gastrointestinal (GI) perforation; patients with certain GI disorders are at increased risk
      • Mood and behavioral problems, including euphoria, mood swings, problems sleeping, changes in personality, severe depression, and psychosis
      • Decreased bone mineral density
      • Live or live attenuated vaccinations should not be administered to patients receiving doses of corticosteroids that suppress the immune system
      • Negative effects on development and growth; pediatric patients receiving long-term corticosteroids should be monitored
      • Potential fetal harm with use during the first trimester
      • Increased appetite and weight gain

    Side Effects

    Eye disorders, endophthalmitis, increased intraocular pressure, and progression of cataracts are possible Triesence side effects; however, other side effects may also occur.

    Immediately inform your doctor about any side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
