What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

    Trental (pentoxifylline) extended release is a prescription medication used to treat intermittent claudication based on chronic occlusive arterial disease of the limbs.

    Trental (pentoxifylline) is available in 400 mg oral extended release tablets.

    The brand product is no longer available in the US; however, generic alternatives may be available.

    Directions

    Take Trental (pentoxifylline) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Patients typically take one tablet by mouth three times a day with meals. Patients may not see an improvement in their symptoms for at least 2 weeks after starting Trental (pentoxifylline).

    Refer to the medication leaflet that comes with your prescription for additional instructions for use.

    Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you have.

    Ingredients

    The active ingredient in Trental is pentoxifylline.

    Contraindications

    Do not take Trental (pentoxifylline) if you had a recent cerebral or retinal hemorrhage, or if you have experienced hypersensitivity to the medication or to derivatives of xanthine.

    Cautions

    • Before you begin taking Trental (pentoxifylline) extended release tablets, tell your doctor about:
      • All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbals
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Trental (pentoxifylline) should be stopped at the first sign of anaphylaxis.
    • Trental (pentoxifylline) should be used with caution in patients with risk factors for hemorrhage.
    • Trental (pentoxifylline) should be used with caution in patients with kidney or liver dysfunction and in elderly patients.

    Side Effects

    Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, belching, and gas are possible Trental (pentoxifylline) side effects; however, other side effects can also occur.

    Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or persist.
