What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Contact your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have.

    Ingredients

The active ingredients in Tenoretic are atenolol and chlorthalidone.

Inactive ingredients include magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and sodium starch glycolate.

    Contraindications

Tenoretic should not be given to patients who have any of the following conditions:

    • Slow heart rate
    • Heart block greater than first degree
    • Cardiogenic shock
    • Heart failure
    • Lack of urine production
    • Allergy to sulfonamide-derived medications or to any of the ingredients in the medication

    Cautions

    • Before you begin treatment with Tenoretic, tell your doctor:
      • About all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
      • About your allergies
      • About your current health problems and past medical history
      • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Tenoretic contains the following warnings and precautions:
      • Patients who have bronchospastic disease should not–in general–be given beta-blockers. Tenoretic has beta1-selectivity; therefore, it should be used with caution in patients who have bronchospastic disease who did not respond well to or cannot tolerate other treatments for high blood pressure. The lowest effective dose of Tenoretic should be used and a bronchodilator should be available. If a dosage increase is required, the dose may be divided to achieve lower peak blood levels.
      • Heart failure
      • Kidney and liver problems
      • Abnormal electrolyte levels and fluid imbalance
      • Ischemic heart disease with abrupt cessation of Tenoretic
      • Slow heart rate and heart block when taking Tenoretic with calcium channel blockers, such as verapamil or diltiazem
      • Beta-blocking medications like Tenoretic should not be routinely stopped before major surgery; however, the heart’s impaired ability to respond to reflex adrenergic stimuli may increase the risks of general anesthesia and surgical procedures.
      • Beta-blocking medications like Tenoretic may mask the rapid heart rate that can occur with low blood glucose; therefore, caution should be used in diabetic patients.
      • Patients with untreated pheochromocytoma should not take Tenoretic.
      • Fetal harm can occur; caution should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
      • Aggravation of peripheral arterial circulatory disorders

    Side Effects

Low heart rate, low blood pressure, dizziness, vertigo, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea are some Tenoretic side effects; however, other side effects may also occur.

Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
