Description
Suprax (cefixime) is an antibacterial medication used to treat the following infections in adults and pediatric patients who are at least 6 months old:
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- Middle ear infections
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
- Chronic bronchitis
- Uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonorrhea
Suprax is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:
- 400 mg film-coated, scored oral tablets
- 400 mg oral capsules
- 100 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg chewable tablets
- 100 mg/5 mL, 200 mg/5 mL, and 500 mg/5 mL oral suspension
Directions
Take Suprax medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns about the medication, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Your doctor will determine an appropriate Suprax dosage for you. Generally, adults take 400 mg by mouth once daily.
Pediatric dosing is based on weight and is generally 8 mg per kg per day.
Ingredients
Cefixime, a cephalosporin, is the active ingredient in Suprax. Dibasic calcium phosphate, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, pregelatinized starch, titanium dioxide, and triacetin are the inactive ingredients.
Contraindications
Patients who are allergic to cefixime or to other cephalosporins should not take Suprax.
Cautions
- Before you start treatment with Suprax antibiotic, tell your doctor:
- About all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- About your allergies
- About your current health conditions and past medical history
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Shock and death are some hypersensitivity reactions that have occurred in patients taking Suprax. Suprax should be stopped if a patient develops a reaction.
- Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea can occur with Suprax use.
- Aspartame, a source of phenylalanine, is contained in Suprax chewable tablets. The daily amount of phenylalanine from all sources should be considered in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) before they start taking the chewable tablet formulation, as phenylalanine can be harmful to these patients.
Side Effects
Diarrhea, nausea, loose stools, stomach pain, indigestion, and vomiting are possible Suprax side effects. However, these are not the only side effects that can occur. Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
