Somatuline (Lanreotide)

What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Somatuline (Lanreotide) is a synthetic hormone analog that mimics the action of natural somatostatin in the body. Lanreotide works by blocking the secretion of several other hormones, which can be useful in conditions where these hormones are in excess. It's classified as a somatostatin analog, and it's primarily used to treat acromegaly, a condition characterized by excessive growth hormone, as well as symptoms associated with neuroendocrine tumors, such as carcinoid syndrome. Lanreotide is administered through injections and helps to control hormone levels and tumor growth.

    Directions

Somatuline Depot is typically given as a deep subcutaneous injection to reduce the effects of certain medical conditions. Healthcare professionals administer the medication, ensuring it reaches the deep tissue beneath the skin's surface. The standard dosage for adult patients involves a 90 or 120 mg injection once every four weeks. However, depending on the individual's response and tolerance, the dose may vary.

    Ingredients

Lanreotide is the active ingredient in Somatuline.

    Contraindications

Patients with a known hypersensitivity to Lanreotide or any component of the formulation and individuals who have experienced allergic reactions, such as angioedema or anaphylaxis, after taking Lanreotide should avoid this medication.

    Cautions

    • Before beginning treatment with the Somatuline injection, it's important to discuss the following with your healthcare provider:
      • Your current health conditions
      • Any allergies you may have
      • All medications you are currently using
      • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Somatuline can cause gallstones. It’s important for your doctor to check regularly for this issue, and if you start having symptoms like intense abdominal pain, contact your healthcare provider. If serious complications develop, treatment might need to be stopped.
    • This medication can affect your blood sugar, causing it to go either too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia). Regular monitoring of your blood sugar is recommended, especially when you start treatment or change doses. If you are diabetic, you may need to adjust your diabetes medications.
    • Somatuline may cause your heart rate to slow down. If you have heart conditions or are at risk for heart issues, your doctor will take extra precautions, which might include regular monitoring.
    • Treatment with Somatuline can lead to changes in thyroid function, usually making it less active. If you experience symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, or feeling cold, your doctor may perform tests to check your thyroid function and adjust treatment if necessary.

    Side Effects

Somatuline may cause stomach pain, nausea, headaches, and symptoms at the injection site such as pain, itching, or lumps. Patients might also experience muscle and joint aches, diarrhea, and dizziness.

Somatuline can lead to serious health issues including gallstones, which may cause gallbladder inflammation, infection, and pancreatitis. Symptoms to watch for include sudden abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin and eyes, fever, and nausea. The medication may also affect blood sugar levels; diabetic patients should monitor their blood sugar closely. Additionally, it can cause slow heart rate, high blood pressure, and thyroid function changes, potentially resulting in fatigue, cold sensitivity, and mood changes. Immediate medical attention is advised for severe symptoms or changes in heart or thyroid health.
