Description
Your doctor may prescribe Rheumate for nutritional support if you use the drug methotrexate. Methotrexate is a medication that treats various conditions, including conditions where the immune system is overactive. It works by blocking folic acid, which is required for cell replication.
Methotrexate is very effective, but blocking folic acid also negatively affects healthy cells. Therefore, it is critical to replenish folate (vitamin B9) when taking methotrexate.
Rheumate is a medical food and not a prescription drug. It requires the supervision of a trained medical professional for usage and cannot be purchased over-the-counter.
Directions
The starting dosage is one capsule by mouth once daily. It can be increased to two capsules by mouth up to twice daily.
Ingredients
There are three active ingredients in Rheumate, including folate (vitamin B9 as L-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid), methylcobalamin (vitamin B12), and curcuminoid turmerone complex (turmeric).
Folate protects healthy cells from damage that would happen during methotrexate therapy. This form of folate can be used by people with methyltetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency who cannot take other forms of vitamin B9.
When taking folate supplements, it can mask the symptoms of anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is included in Rheumate to ensure adequate B12 for a healthy metabolism.
Turmeric is an antioxidant that scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protects the liver from damage by methotrexate.
