Description
Pro-Banthine is used with other medications to treat peptic ulcers.
Pro-Banthine comes in 7.5 mg and 15 mg oral tablets.
The brand name has been discontinued in the U.S.
Directions
Take Pro-Banthine exactly as your doctor has prescribed. If you have any questions or concerns about the medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Your doctor will determine an appropriate Pro-Banthine dose for you. The usual starting dose is Pro-Banthine 15 mg by mouth four times a day (30 minutes before each meal and at bedtime).
Patients with mild issues, older patients, and smaller patients may only need 7.5 mg by mouth three times a day (30 minutes before each meal).
Ingredients
Propantheline bromide is the active ingredient in Pro-Banthine. Calcium carbonate, castor oil, corn starch, lactose anhydrous, light mineral oil, magnesium carbonate, magnesium stearate, saccharin sodium, sucrose, talc, titanium dioxide, and waxes are the inactive ingredients. Cosmetic ochre and cosmetic red are coloring agents contained in the 15 mg tablets.
Contraindications
Some patients should not take Pro-Banthine, including those with:
- Glaucoma
- Obstructive gastrointestinal tract disease (i.e., pyloroduodenal stenosis, achalasia, paralytic ileus)
- Obstructive uropathy (i.e., bladder neck obstruction)
- Intestinal atony of elderly or debilitated patients
- Severe ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon complicating ulcerative colitis
- Unstable cardiovascular adjustment in acute hemorrhage
- Myasthenia gravis
Cautions
- Before you start Pro-Banthine treatment, tell your doctor:
- About all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- About your allergies
- About your current health conditions and past medical history
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Fever and heat stroke can occur with Pro-Banthine treatment when exposed to high environmental temperatures.
- Diarrhea may suggest incomplete intestinal obstruction, especially in patients who have ileostomy or colostomy. If this is the case, Pro-Banthine should not be used, as it can cause harm.
- Neuromuscular blockade that can result in muscular weakness and paralysis may occur with Pro-Banthine overdose.
- Rapid heart rate may occur with Pro-Banthine treatment; therefore, caution should be exercised in patients with heart problems.
- Older patients and patients with autonomic neuropathy, liver or kidney disease, thyroid problems, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, heart arrhythmias, high blood pressure, and hiatal hernias should use Pro-Banthine cautiously.
Side Effects
Decreased sweating, blurred vision, and other vision problems are possible Pro-Banthine side effects. However, these are not the only side effects that can occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
