What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

    Promacta is a prescription medication used for treating the following conditions:

    • Thrombocytopenia in adult and pediatric patients who are at least 1 years old and have not responded adequately to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy
    • Thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic hepatitis C
    • With other therapies for severe aplastic anemia in adult and pediatric patients who are at least 2 years old
    • Aplastic anemia in patients who have not adequately responded to immunosuppressive therapy

    Promacta comes in oral tablets in the following strengths:

    • 12.5 mg
    • 25 mg
    • 50 mg
    • 75 mg

    Promacta also comes in an oral suspension in the following strengths:

    • 12.5 mg
    • 25 mg

    Directions

    Take Promacta exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

    Your doctor will tell you how much Promacta you should take based on your age and condition being treated. Wait at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids, calcium-rich foods, and mineral supplements.

    Store Promacta tablets and oral suspension at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Once the oral suspension is mixed, it should be administered right away. Properly throw away any remainder after 30 minutes.

    All medications should be kept out of reach of children.

    Ingredients

    Eltrombopag olamine is the active ingredient in Promacta. Inactive ingredients in the tablets include magnesium stearate, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and sodium starch glycolate, FD&C Blue No. 2 aluminum lake (50-mg tablet), FD&C Yellow No. 6 aluminum lake (25-mg tablet),hypromellose, Iron Oxide Black and Iron Oxide Red (75-mg tablet), polyethylene glycol 400, polysorbate 80 (12.5-mg tablet), or titanium dioxide.

    The inactive ingredients in the oral suspension include mannitol, sucralose, and xanthan gum.

    Contraindications

    There are no contraindications, or reasons why, a person cannot take Promacta per the most recent Prescribing Information.

    Cautions

    Promacta has the following FDA Boxed Warning:

    • The risk of liver problems may be increased in patients who take Promacta with interferon and ribavirin.
    • Promacta may increase severe and potentially life-threatening liver toxicity. Monitoring of liver function should be performed and dosing discontinued as recommended.

    • Before you start taking Promacta, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Liver problems can occur with Promacta use. Liver function should be monitored before and during therapy.
    • Promacta is associated with an increased risk of death and progression of myelodysplastic syndromes to acute myeloid leukemia.
    • A blockage or narrowing of the blood vessel that brings blood to the liver by a blood clot can occur. Platelets should be monitored regularly.
    • Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Promacta.

    Side Effects

    Anemia, nausea, fever, increased liver enzymes, cough, fatigue, headache, and diarrhea are Promacta side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
