Directions
Take probenecid exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will instruct you on how much probenecid you should be taking. For more instructions for use, carefully read the medication guide that accompanies your prescription.
Recommended dosing for adults: 250 mg by mouth twice a day for one week, then 500 mg by mouth twice a day thereafter.
Store probenecid tablets between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F).

Ingredients
The active ingredient is probenecid.
Inactive ingredients include silicon dioxide, corn starch, D&C Yellow No. 10, FD&C Blue No. 2, FD&C Red No. 40, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose 101, polyethylene glycol 4000, polyvinyl alcohol, povidone K90, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium starch glycolate type A potato, talc, and titanium dioxide.
Contraindications
Patients who meet the following criteria should not receive probenecid:
- An allergy to probenecid
- Younger than 2 years of age
- Have a blood disease/disorder or uric acid kidney stones
- Active acute gout attack
Cautions
- Before you begin taking probenecid, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Probenecid is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
- Worsening of gout after treatment
- Increased levels of methotrexate that may lead to toxicity
- Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
- Use in pregnancy: the benefits must outweigh the risks
- Blood in the urine, renal colic, costovertebral pain, and uric acid stones that can occur with probenecid treatment may be prevented by alkalizing the urine and drinking plenty of fluids
- Caution should be used in patients who have had a peptic ulcer
- Patients with kidney problems may need an adjusted dose
- A reducing substance may be seen in the urine, which will go away once therapy is stopped
Side Effects
Headache, dizziness, acute gouty arthritis, liver necrosis, vomiting, nausea, anorexia, sore gums, kidney problems, uric acid stones, renal colic, costovertebral pain, changes in urinary frequency, anaphylaxis, fever, hives, itching, anemia, blood cell count abnormalities, and skin problems are possible side effects of probenecid; however, other side effects may also occur. Immediately tell your doctor about any side effects that bother you or won’t resolve
