Plenvu (polyethylene glycol 3350, sodium ascorbate, sodium sulfate, ascorbic acid, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride) is a medication used for bowel preparation before colonoscopy in adults. Directions
Plenvu is available as an oral solution. It contains two pouches: Dose 1 (Pouch A) and Dose 2 (Pouch B). The recommended usage is to take Dose 1 in the evening before your colonoscopy and Dose 2 the morning of your colonoscopy. Each dose should be dissolved in water to make a 500 mL solution. The Plenvu solution should be drunk over 30 minutes, followed by additional clear fluids. Avoid taking oral medications within 1 hour of each dose. Consult the medication label or your healthcare provider for complete instructions.
Ingredients
The active ingredients in Plenvu are polyethylene glycol 3350, sodium ascorbate, sodium sulfate, ascorbic acid, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. You should also avoid Plenvu if you have a gastrointestinal obstruction, bowel perforation, gastric retention, ileus, or toxic megacolon.
Contraindications
Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you may have. You should not use Plenvu if you have an allergy to polyethylene glycol or any of the ingredients in Plenvu.
Cautions
- Before you begin using Plenvu, inform your healthcare provider:
- About all medications you are currently taking, especially medications for seizures, heart problems, or kidney conditions.
- About any medical conditions you have, particularly heart problems, kidney problems, seizures, gastric retention, bowel obstruction, or phenylketonuria (PKU). Plenvu contains phenylalanine, which can cause complications for people with PKU.
- If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Plenvu's effects on an unborn baby are not known.
- If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is unknown whether Plenvu can pass into your breast milk.
- If you have Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD). Use Plenvu with caution.
- Plenvu may affect the absorption of other medications, including oral contraceptives, leading to their decreased effectiveness.
- Plenvu may cause changes in electrolyte levels and fluid balance. Seek immediate medical help if you experience seizures, irregular heartbeat, or increased thirst or urination, as these may be signs of serious fluid and electrolyte abnormalities.
- Plenvu may lead to serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience trouble breathing, skin rash, itching, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
- Suspected GI obstruction or perforation should be ruled out before administration.
- Patients with a history of cardiac arrhythmias should consider pre-dose and post-colonoscopy ECGs.
- Mucosal ulcerations may occur in patients with known or suspected inflammatory bowel disease.
- Plenvu should be administered under observation if you're at risk of aspiration.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Plenvu include nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and stomach discomfort. If you experience any persistent side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
