Periostat comes in 20 mg oral tablets.
Directions
Take Periostat as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Recommended Periostat 20 mg dosage: Take 20 mg by mouth every 12 hours for up to 9 months after scaling and root planing. Wait at least one hour before or two hours after meals. Take with adequate fluids to decrease the risk of esophageal irritation and ulceration.
Store Periostat tablets at room temperature between 15°C-30°C (59°F-86°F).
Ingredients
The tetracycline doxycycline hyclate is the active ingredient in Periostat. Inactive ingredients include hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, titanium dioxide, and triacetin.
Contraindications
Patients who are allergic to doxycycline or to other tetracyclines should not take the medication.
Cautions
- Before you start taking Periostat, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Taking tetracyclines during tooth development (last half of pregnancy to the age of 8 years old) can cause permanent discoloration of the teeth. Benefits should outweigh the risks before these populations take the medication.

- Periostat can cause an overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms.
- The incidence of vaginal yeast infections may be increased by tetracyclines.
- Patients who have had or are prone to oral yeast infections should use Periostat with caution.
Side Effects
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tongue inflammation, trouble swallowing, enterocolitis, and inflammatory lesions are possible Periostat side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
