Description
Periactin (cyproheptadine hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to treat allergic disorders, itchy skin conditions, and certain types of vascular headaches.
Periactin comes in 4 mg tablets for oral administration.
Directions
Take Periactin as directed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns about the medication, contact your doctor or pharmacy.
Dosing is individualized based on age, medical condition, and severity of symptoms.
Ingredients
Cyproheptadine hydrochloride is the active ingredient in Periactin.
Starch-maize, calcium hydrogen phosphate, lactose, and magnesium stearate are the excipients.
Contraindications
Periactin should not be used to treat asthma attacks.
Periactin should not be used in nursing mothers or in newborn or premature babies.
Periactin should not be used in the following conditions:
- Allergy to cryptoheptadine or other similar drugs
- Receiving treatment with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
- Angle-closure glaucoma
- Stenosing peptic ulcer
- Symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy
- Bladder neck obstruction
- Pyloroduodenal obstruction
- Elderly, debilitated patients
Cautions
- Before starting treatment with Periactin, be sure to discuss the following with your doctor:
- All the medications you take medications
- Your allergies
- Your current health conditions and past medical history
- If you are pregnant
- If you are breastfeeding
- Do not drive, operate machinery, or participate in other potentially hazardous activities until you know how Periactin affects you.
- Patients with a history of bronchial asthma, increased intraocular pressure, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, or high blood pressure should use Periactin with caution.
Side Effects
Common Periactin side effects include drowsiness and excessive sleepiness. Periactin may also increase appetite. Other side effects may also occur. Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that worry you or will not resolve.
