Description
Oxtellar XR (oxcarbazepine) is available by prescription only to treat partial-onset seizures in patients who are 6 years of age and older.
The Oxtellar XR generic is oxcarbazepine.
Oxtellar XR is available in 150 mg, 300 mg, and 600 mg extended-release tablets for oral administration.

Take Oxtellar XR as your doctor has instructed. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended Oxtellar XR dosage in adults is 600 mg by mouth one time a day. The dose may be increased depending on how well patients respond and tolerate the medication. A lower dose may be needed in elderly patients or patients with kidney problems.
The Oxtellar XR dosage in pediatric patients is based on body weight and is given by mouth one time a day.
Ingredients
Oxcarbazepine is the active ingredient contained in Oxtellar XR.
The 150 mg tablets contain the following inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, hypromellose, yellow iron oxide, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc, and titanium dioxide.
The 300 mg tablets contain the following inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, hypromellose, yellow iron oxide, red iron oxide, black iron oxide, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc, and titanium dioxide.
The 600 mg tablets contain the following inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, hypromellose, red iron oxide, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc, and titanium dioxide.
Contraindications
Do not take Oxtellar XR if you are allergic to eslicarbazepine acetate, oxcarbazepine, or to any of Oxtellar XR’s other ingredients.
Cautions
- Before you begin taking Oxtellar XR, tell your doctor about:
- All the medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Oxtellar XR can cause low sodium levels in the blood.
- Some patients who have allergic reactions to carbamazepine may develop allergic reactions to Oxtellar XR.
- Serious dermatological reactions can occur with the use of Oxtellar XR. Seek emergency care right away if this occurs.
- Swelling underneath the skin can occur with the use of Oxtellar XR.
- The risk of suicidal ideation and behaviors is increased with the use of Oxtellar XR. Patients should be monitored for these effects.
- Oxtellar XR should be discontinued gradually to avoid the occurrence of seizures.
- Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS), or multi-organ hypersensitivity, can occur with the use of Oxtellar XR. Seek emergency care right away if you develop a fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and/or facial swelling. Inflammation of the kidney, liver, or heart and abnormal blood conditions can occur.
- Abnormal blood counts and reactions can occur with the use of Oxtellar XR.
- Worsening or new seizures may occur with the use of Oxtellar XR, especially in children. Seek emergency care right away if this occurs.
Side Effects
Vomiting, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, indigestion, vision problems, weakness, nasopharyngitis, and sinusitis are side effects associated with Oxtellar XR. However, if you develop side effects that bother you or won’t go away, contact your doctor right away.
