Description
Oxsoralen-Ultra is used to treat psoriasis that has not responded to other treatment regimens and when biopsy supports the diagnosis. It is intended to be given with a schedule of controlled doses of long-wave ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Oxsoralen-Ultra 10 mg comes in oral gelatin capsules.
The Oxsoralen-Ultra 10 mg generic name is methoxsalen.
Directions
Take Oxsoralen-Ultra as directed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor about any questions or concerns you may have.
Your doctor will determine an appropriate treatment regimen for you. The initial dose is to take Oxsoralen-Ultra 1-2 hours before UVA exposure. Take with low-fat food or milk.
Your doctor will discuss safety measures and procedures that should be followed before and after treatment.
Ingredients
Oxsoralen-Ultra contains 10 mg methoxsalen. The inactive ingredients include D&C yellow 10, FD&C blue 1, FD&C yellow 6, gelatin, glycerin, methylparaben, polyethylene glycol 400, propylparaben, purified water, sorbitol solution, and titanium dioxide.
Contraindications
Patients with an allergy to any of Oxsoralen-Ultra’s ingredients, melanoma or a history of melanoma, or invasive skin cancer should not take the medication. In addition, patients who do not have a lens in their eye should not take Oxsoralen-Ultra.
Patients with light-sensitive disease states such as lupus, porphyria, xeroderma pigmentosum, and albinism should not receive Oxsoralen-Ultra unless there is a special circumstance.
Cautions
- Before you begin taking Oxsoralen-Ultra, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Methoxsalen with UV radiation should only be performed by physicians who are competent in psoriasis diagnosis and treatment and are specially trained in photochemotherapy. Treatment should be done only under close medical supervision.
- Oxsoralen-Ultra should not be used interchangeably with Oxsoralen® or 8-MOP®.
- Taking more than the recommended dose or taking the medication longer than recommended can cause skin burns from UVA or sunlight.
- Oxsoralen-Ultra may increase the risk of skin cancer.
- Oxsoralen-Ultra may increase the risk of cataracts.
- “Premature aging” of the skin can occur from being exposed to UV radiation or sunlight.
- Patients with or who have a history of basal cell carcinoma, have received x-ray therapy or grenz ray therapy, or have received arsenic therapy should be monitored closely.
- Elderly patients and patients with liver problems, cataracts, cardiovascular problems, kidney problems, or skin cancer should use Oxsoralen-Ultra cautiously.
- Patients with heart disease who may not be able to stand for a long time or endure heat stress should not be treated in a vertical UVA chamber.
- Caution should be used in patients who are also receiving medications that can cause photosensitivity.
- Eye examinations should be completed before starting Oxsoralen-Ultra then once a year.
Side Effects
Nausea is the most common side effect. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that worry you or won’t resolve.
