Description
Nuedexta indication: Nuedexta (dextromethorphan hydrobromide and quinidine sulfate) is an oral medication prescribed to treat pseudobulbar affect (PBA), which is involuntary and uncontrollable laughter or crying episodes.
Nuedexta comes in oral capsules that contain 20 mg dextromethorphan hydrobromide and 10 mg of quinidine sulfate.
Directions
Take Nuedexta exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended dose is to take one capsule by mouth once daily for 7 days, followed by one capsule by mouth every 12 hours for maintenance therapy.

Store Nuedexta at 25°C (77°F); keep out of reach of children.

Ingredients
The active ingredients in Nuedexta are dextromethorphan hydrobromide and quinidine sulfate.
Inactive ingredients include croscarmellose sodium NF, microcrystalline cellulose NF, colloidal silicon dioxide NF, lactose monohydrate NF, and magnesium stearate NF.
Contraindications
Nuedexta should not be used with quinidine, quinine, or mefloquine.
Nuedexta should not be given to patients with an allergy to any of its ingredients or who have had hypersensitivity reactions to quinidine, quinine, or mefloquine (e.g., decreased platelet counts, hepatitis).
Do not use Nuedexta with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI. Do not start taking an MAOI until after 14 days of stopping Nuedexta.
Patients with prolonged QT interval, congenital long QT syndrome, heart failure, a history suggestive of torsades de pointes, or have complete atrioventricular (AV) block without an implanted pacemaker or are at great risk of complete AV block should not take Nuedexta.
Nuedexta should not be used with thioridazine, pimozide, or other medications that cause QT prolongation and are metabolized by CYP2D6.
Cautions
- Before you begin taking Nuedexta, discuss the following with your doctor:
- All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Nuedexta contains the following warnings and precautions:
- Hypersensitivity reactions such as thrombocytopenia, or low platelet counts
- Hepatitis
- QT prolongation
- Left ventricular hypertrophy
- Dizziness
- Serotonin syndrome
- Anticholinergic effects of quinidine
- Drug interactions with CYP2D6-metabolized medications; ask your doctor whether you are taking any of these medications
Side Effects
Diarrhea, dizziness, cough, vomiting, weakness, peripheral edema, urinary tract infection, influenza, increased gamma-glutamyltransferase, and flatulence are the most common Nuedexta side effects; however, other side effects may also occur.
Talk to your doctor right away if you develop side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
