Directions
Nitro-Dur is a transdermal medication, meaning it is administered through a patch applied directly to the skin. It is typically applied for 10 to 12 hours daily. The dosage may be adjusted by your doctor according to individual needs. When applying Nitro-Dur, wait until the skin is completely dry. The patch should be pressed firmly in place with the palm of your hand. Although showering, bathing, and swimming are permitted with the patch in place, the patch should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
Ingredients
Nitro-Dur contains 1,2,3-propanetriol trinitrate as its primary active ingredient. The Nitro-Dur transdermal system uses acrylic-based polymer adhesives to hold the nitroglycerin. These adhesives allow for a sustained and controlled release of the medication.
Contraindications
You may need to avoid this medication if any of the following apply:
- You have had an allergy to Nitroglycerin or adhesive in the past.
- You are taking erectile dysfunction medications, such as sildenafil, vardenafil, or tadalafil
- You are taking pulmonary hypertension medications, like riociguat
Cautions
- When using Nitro-Dur, there are certain precautions that must be taken to ensure safe and effective use. Tell your healthcare provider about the following:
- Other medications you take.
- Other medical conditions you have.
- Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Medications for erectile dysfunction, like sildenafil, can increase Nitro-Dur's effect on lowering blood pressure to dangerous levels.
- If you have had a recent heart attack or heart failure, Nitro-Dur's safety and effectiveness for these conditions aren't well-known. Your doctor may closely monitor your condition if you're using it for these reasons.
- Avoid placing a defibrillator (a device used in emergencies to restart the heart) over a Nitro-Dur patch. This can cause minor electrical sparks and possibly harm the skin.
- Nitro-Dur can cause a significant drop in blood pressure, particularly when you stand up, which can be more severe in older adults or in people taking certain other medications.
- Seniors should be extra cautious when using Nitro-Dur, as they may be more prone to the risks of low blood pressure, including the risk of falls.
- For people with a certain heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Nitro-Dur might make chest pain worse, so it's important to discuss this with your doctor.
- People who have used nitrates for a long time might experience withdrawal symptoms like chest pain if they stop suddenly, suggesting a dependence on the medication.
- Some studies have suggested that taking breaks from Nitro-Dur can lead to more chest pain or decreased ability to exercise. However, these effects are not well-understood and are considered rare.
Side Effects
Nitro-Dur may cause side effects. Common Nitroglycerin side effects can include headache, flushing, or redness of the skin, especially on the face and neck. Patients may also experience a feeling of warmth, dizziness, lightheadedness, sweating, and tingling sensations in the hands or feet. These side effects are generally mild and may diminish with continued use of the medication.
Serious side effects associated with Nitro-Dur require prompt medical attention. Such side effects may include worsening chest pain, pounding heartbeats, and fluttering in the chest. Other severe symptoms may consist of a slow heart rate, feelings of lightheadedness that may lead to fainting, and symptoms indicative of a heart attack – like chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to the jaw or shoulder, nausea, and sweating. If you experience any of these serious side effects while using Nitro-Dur, seek medical advice immediately.
