Description
Nimotop is a calcium channel blocker used to treat various vascular conditions. It is indicated for preventing and treating cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain).
Nimotop belongs to the drug class dihydropyridine, and it works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle cells, which ultimately relaxes the muscles of the blood vessels in the brain.
Nimotop prefers to attach to cerebral blood vessels over other blood vessels, making it useful for treating people who have experienced a bleed in the brain. Relaxing the brain’s blood vessels immediately after a bleed helps to prevent further damage and reduce the risk of brain damage.
