Description
Nexavar (sorafenib) is used to treat liver cancer, kidney cancer, and differentiated thyroid cancer that is not managed with radioactive iodine treatment.
Nexavar is available in 200 mg oral tablets.
The Nexavar generic name is sorafenib.
Directions
Take Nexavar exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, call your doctor or pharmacy.
Your doctor will tell you how many tablets you should take and for how long. Patients typically take 400 mg (2 tablets) by mouth two times a day. Do not take with you food.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Nexavar is sorafenib tosylate. Inactive ingredients include croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, sodium lauryl sulphate, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and ferric oxide red.
Contraindications
Patients who are allergic to sorafenib or any of Nexavar’s other ingredients should not take the medication. In addition, patients with squamous cell lung cancer should not take Nexavar with carboplatin and paclitaxel.
Cautions
- Before you start treatment with Nexavar, tell your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Cardiovascular events can occur with Nexavar treatment.
- The risk of bleeding may be increased with Nexavar treatment.
- High blood pressure may occur with Nexavar treatment. Blood pressure should be checked weekly during the first 6 weeks of treatment then periodically.
- Dermatological reactions, including hand-foot skin reactions and rash, can occur with Nexavar treatment. Some cases may be serious or life-threatening. Seek medical care right away if you develop skin reactions.
- Gastrointestinal perforation can occur with Nexavar treatment.
- Heart arrhythmias, including QT prolongation, can occur with Nexavar treatment.
- Liver injury can be caused by Nexavar.
- Harm to an unborn baby may be caused by Nexavar. Effective birth control methods should be used.
- Thyroid problems can occur with Nexavar.
Side Effects
Diarrhea, fatigue, infection, hair loss, skin reactions, weight loss, appetite loss, nausea, stomach pains, high blood pressure, and bleeding are common Nexavar side effects; however, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
