Description
MoviPrep (polyethylene glycol 3350, sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium ascorbate, and ascorbic acid for oral solution) is an osmotic laxative for adults that is used to clean the colon before a colonoscopy.
MoviPrep is available in 2 pouches for reconstituting in water:
- Pouch A contains 100 grams of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 3350, 7.5 grams of sodium sulfate, 2.691 grams of sodium chloride, 1.015 grams of potassium chloride, and lemon flavoring
- Pouch B contains 4.7 grams of ascorbic acid and 5.9 grams of sodium ascorbate

Directions
Use MoviPrep as directed by your doctor. For additional instructions for use, refer to the medication guide that comes with the medication.
It is recommended to complete two doses in preparation for your colonoscopy.
Only drink clear liquids once you begin MoviPrep until after the colonoscopy. Avoid eating or drinking alcohol, milk, or any other foods and drinks that are red, purple, or contain pulp. Avoid taking other laxatives while you are taking MoviPrep. Avoid taking oral medications within 1 hour before or after starting each MoviPrep dose. Make sure you finish the second dose at least 2 hours before the colonoscopy.
After mixing MoviPrep with water, keep it stored upright in a refrigerator and use it within 24 hours.

Ingredients
The active ingredients in Pouch A include polyethylene glycol (PEG) 3350, sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride, and in Pouch B include ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate.
The inactive ingredients in Pouch A include aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and lemon flavoring including citral, lemon oil and lime oil, maltodextrin, xanthan gum, and vitamin E.
Contraindications
Patients with gastrointestinal obstruction, perforation of the bowel, gastric retention, ileus, toxic colitis or megacolon, or an allergy to any of MoviPrep’s ingredients should not take MoviPrep.
Cautions
- Before you begin MoviPrep for colonoscopy, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- MoviPrep is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
- Fluid and electrolyte abnormalities
- Heart arrhythmias
- Seizures
- Appropriate hydration and necessary lab monitoring should be completed in patients with kidney problems or taking medications that can affect kidney function
- Colonic mucosal ulcerations
- Suspected gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation should be ruled out before administration of MoviPrep
- Patients who are at risk for aspiration should be observed
- MoviPrep should be used with caution in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
- MoviPrep contains phenylalanine and may be accompanied with risks in patients who have phenylketonuria
- Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
Side Effects
General discomfort, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, abdominal distension, anal discomfort, thirst, rigors, hunger, and dizziness are possible side effects of MoviPrep. Other side effects may also occur. Immediately tell your doctor about any side effects that bother you or won’t resolve.
