Description
Movantik (naloxegol) is a prescription medication used to treat constipation caused by opioids in adult patients with long-lasting pain that isn't caused by cancer.
Movantik is available in 12.5 mg and 25 mg oral tablets.

Directions
Movantik should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Notify your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have.
The recommended dose is 12.5 to 25 mg by mouth once daily on an empty stomach. It should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after the first meal of the day. Do not take Movantik with grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
The dose may be lower in patients with kidney problems.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Movantik is naloxegol oxalate.
Inactive ingredients include mannitol, cellulose microcrystalline, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, and propyl gallate. The coating of the tablet contains hypromellose, titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol, iron oxide red, and iron oxide black.
Contraindications
Some patients should avoid Movantik, including those with gastrointestinal obstruction or are at risk of another obstruction.
Cautions
- Before you begin taking Movantik, you should inform your doctor of:
- All the medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your medical history and health problems
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Symptoms of opioid withdrawal, including excessive sweating, chills, diarrhea, stomach pain, anxiety, and irritability, can occur with Movantik treatment. Seek medical care if any of these effects occur.
- Severe stomach pain with or without diarrhea can occur with Movantik treatment. Seek medical care if you develop these effects.
- Gastrointestinal perforation can occur with Movantik treatment. Seek medical care if you develop severe, persistent, or worsening stomach pain.
Side Effects
Like all medications, Movantik can cause side effects. The most common include stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, gas, vomiting, and headache. However, these may not be all the side effects that occur.
Notify your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
