Description
Metacam (Meloxicam) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for relieving inflammation and pain in both acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in dogs. It works by blocking specific enzymes involved in the inflammatory process, thereby reducing swelling and discomfort. Chewable tablets are flavored, making them appealing to most dogs, and can be given with or without food.
Directions
The initial treatment involves a single dose of 0.2 mg Meloxicam per kg of body weight, administered either orally or via injection. For ongoing treatment, the recommended maintenance dose is 0.1 mg per kg once daily. Chewable tablets, which come in 1 mg or 2.5 mg dosages, may be given with or without food. They are typically well-received by dogs.
Ingredients
Meloxicam is the active ingredient in Metacam.
Contraindications
Metacam may not be suitable under certain conditions. It's important to avoid administering this medication if any of the following apply:
- Pregnant or lactating animals
- Dogs suffering from gastrointestinal disorders
- Impaired hepatic, cardiac, or renal function
- Hemorrhagic disorders
- Dogs younger than 6 weeks or weighing less than 4 kg
- Known hypersensitivity to Meloxicam or other ingredients
Cautions
- Before starting treatment with Metacam, be sure to inform a veterinarian about the following:
- Any medical conditions
- Any allergies
- All medications being taken
- Whether the dog is pregnant or breastfeeding
- Metacam should not be used in animals that are dehydrated, have low blood volume, or are hypotensive, as it increases the risk of kidney toxicity.
- The formulation of Metacam for dogs should not be used in cats. For cats, only the specific Metacam for cats 0.5 mg/ml oral suspension should be used.
- The frequency is categorized as very common (more than 1 in 10 animals), common, uncommon, rare, or very rare (less than 1 in 10,000 animals).
- The safety of Metacam during pregnancy and lactation has not been established.
- Do not use Metacam with other NSAIDs, glucocorticosteroids, diuretics, anticoagulants, or certain antibiotics due to the risk of toxicity. Always allow for a treatment-free period before starting Metacam if the animal has been pre-treated with other anti-inflammatory medications.
Side Effects
Metacam, like other NSAIDs, may cause side effects such as loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Occasionally, there may be signs of blood in the stool or urine, which can be an indication of internal bleeding. Most of these side effects typically appear during the first week of treatment and often improve once the medication is stopped.
In very rare cases, Metacam can cause more severe side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, or elevated liver enzymes. Symptoms like bloody diarrhea, vomiting blood, or signs of kidney issues should be taken seriously, as these can be life-threatening. If you notice any of these symptoms, stop using Metacam immediately and consult your veterinarian for further guidance.
