Directions
Metacam is available in 0.5 mg/mL and 1.5 mg/mL oral suspensions.
Follow the instructions that come with your dog's Metacam prescription. If you have any questions or concerns about the prescription, talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist.
Dosing - Metacam 0.5 mg/mL
Dogs weighing less than 1 pound: Shake well and take off the cap. Using the dropper bottle, place two drops for each pound of your dog's body weight directly onto your dog's food. Tightly put the cap back on the bottle after each use.
Dogs weighing between 1 and 10 pounds: Shake well and take off the cap. You may use the dropper bottle or the measuring syringe that came with your dog's prescription. The measuring syringe fits onto the bottle. It has a scale that starts at 1 pound to deliver the daily maintenance dose (0.05 mg/pound). If you use the syringe, be sure to round your dog's weight down to the nearest 1 pound. Tightly put the cap back on the bottle after each use.

Ingredients
The active ingredient in Metacam is meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
Contraindications
Do not use Metacam if your dog is allergic to meloxicam.
Do not give Metacam to cats.
Cautions
- Do not give Metacam to humans.
- Before administering Metacam to your dog, tell your veterinarian about your dog's:
- Allergies
- Medications, including prescription, non-prescription, and supplements
- Medical conditions, including stomach problems, liver problems, and kidney problems
- Pregnancy status or if you plan to breed your dog
- Nursing status
Side Effects
The most common side effects associated with Metacam include diarrhea, vomiting, and decreased appetite; however, these are not the only side effects that can be caused by Metacam. Contact your veterinarian right away if your dog develops concerning or persistent side effects.
