Description
Merional is a medication used to treat adult women with infertility issues who have not responded to treatment with clomiphene citrate. It is used to stimulate the development of follicles in patients who are receiving assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like in-vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT). It may also be given along with human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) to stimulate the production of sperm in men with congenital or acquired hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
Merional comes in a powder and solvent solution for injection.

Ingredients
The active ingredient in Merional is menotrophin BP (Human menopausal gonadotropin, HMG), purified from human urine.
Contraindications
Merional should not be administered to patients who are allergic to menotrophin or to any of the other ingredients in the medication or in patients who have hypothalamic or pituitary gland tumors.
In addition, Merional should not be administered to women with ovarian enlargement or a cyst not caused by polycystic ovarian disease, gynecological bleeding of an unknown cause, or ovarian, uterine, or mammary cancer.
Merional should not be administered when a patient is unable to achieve an effective response, including:
- In females: primary ovarian failure, malformation of sex organs that are not compatible with pregnancy, or fibroid tumors of the uterus that are not compatible with pregnancy
- In males: primary testicular insufficiency
Cautions
- Before you begin therapy with Merional, discuss the following with your doctor:
- All the medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your past medical history or current health issues
- Your pregnancy status
- Your breastfeeding status
- Ovarian hyperstimulation can occur, resulting in symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, severe ovarian enlargement, weight gain, shortness of breath, low urine output, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
- The risk for multiple pregnancy is increased with Merional therapy.
- Pregnancy wastage by miscarriage or abortion occurs more frequently in patients who undergo stimulation of follicular growth for ovulation induction or ART compared to the normal population.
- Ectopic pregnancy occurs more often in women after receiving IVF.
- Cancers of the ovary and reproductive system have occurred in women who have received multiple infertility treatment regimens.
- Congenital malformations may occur more often after ART compared to spontaneous conceptions.
- The risk for blood clotting disorders may be further increased in women who have risk factors.
Side Effects
Ovarian cysts, injection site reactions, and headache are common Merional injection side effects; however, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
