What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Lovenox HP (enoxaparin) belongs to a class of medications called anticoagulants or antithrombotics. These medications work to decrease the blood’s clotting ability, which can decrease the risk of harmful blood clots.

Lovenox HP is available by prescription to prevent and treat blood clots in the leg’s blood vessels. These clots can travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism.

Sometimes, Lovenox HP is used with aspirin to treat unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attacks, which do not involve the full thickness of the heart wall.

Lovenox HP is also used for treating ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a type of heart attack, and to open up the coronary arteries following a heart attack.

Lovenox HP comes in prefilled syringes:

    • 90 mg/0.6 mL
    • 150 mg/mL

    Directions

Lovenox HP should be used as directed by your doctor. The instructions for use that come with your prescription should be thoroughly read and followed. Reach out to your doctor or pharmacist with any questions or concerns you may have.

Your dose depends on the condition being treated or prevented and will be determined by your doctor. You will receive instructions on how to properly prepare, administer, and dispose of Lovenox HP.

The medicine should be injected underneath the skin of the lower abdomen at least 5 centimeters away from your belly button and out toward your sides. You should inject into a different place of the lower abdomen each time.

Needles and syringes should not be shared with other people.

Store Lovenox HP at room temperature. Protect from heat. Keep the medicine away from children.
