Description
Lovenox HP (enoxaparin) belongs to a class of medications called anticoagulants or antithrombotics. These medications work to decrease the blood’s clotting ability, which can decrease the risk of harmful blood clots.
Lovenox HP is available by prescription to prevent and treat blood clots in the leg’s blood vessels. These clots can travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism.
Sometimes, Lovenox HP is used with aspirin to treat unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attacks, which do not involve the full thickness of the heart wall.
Lovenox HP is also used for treating ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a type of heart attack, and to open up the coronary arteries following a heart attack.

Directions
Lovenox HP should be used as directed by your doctor. The instructions for use that come with your prescription should be thoroughly read and followed. Reach out to your doctor or pharmacist with any questions or concerns you may have.
Your dose depends on the condition being treated or prevented and will be determined by your doctor. You will receive instructions on how to properly prepare, administer, and dispose of Lovenox HP.
The medicine should be injected underneath the skin of the lower abdomen at least 5 centimeters away from your belly button and out toward your sides. You should inject into a different place of the lower abdomen each time.
Needles and syringes should not be shared with other people.
Store Lovenox HP at room temperature. Protect from heat. Keep the medicine away from children.
Ingredients
Enoxaparin is the active ingredient in Lovenox HP injection.
Contraindications
Patients should not use Lovenox HP if they:
- Have an allergy to enoxaparin or to any of the medication’s ingredients
- Have an allergy to heparin or any other low molecular weight heparins
- Have a history of confirmed or suspected heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (decreased platelets in the blood) or a positive in vitro platelet-aggregation test while being treated with Lovenox HP
- Have an active or subacute bacterial infection of the heart
- Are actively bleeding
- Have a reduction in platelet count
- Have a major blood clotting disorder
- Have an active stomach or intestinal ulcer
- Have a hemorrhagic cerebrovascular accident
- Have severe high blood pressure that is not managed
- Have eye problems associated with diabetes or bleeding
- Have other conditions or diseases that increase the risk of hemorrhage (bleeding)
- Have injuries or operations to the brain, spinal cord, eyes, or ears
- Are receiving spinal/epidural anesthesia that require repeated doses of Lovenox HP
Cautions
- Before you begin using Lovenox HP, discuss the following with your doctor:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Side Effects
Injection site reactions (hardening of skin, pain, redness, or bruising), stomach pain, surgical wound bleeding, bone pain or fractures, chest pain, confusion, dizziness, hair loss, headache, paralysis, heart arrhythmias, shortness of breath, vision changes, and vomiting are possible side effects of Lovenox HP. However, other side effects can also occur. Contact your doctor as soon as you experience side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
