Description
Koselugo (selumetinib) is a medication prescribed to treat pediatric patients who are 2+ years old with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and have inoperable plexiform neurofibromas that are causing symptoms.
Koselugo is dispensed in 10 mg and 25 mg capsules for oral administration.
Directions
Koselugo should be taken as prescribed by the treating physician.
The capsules may be taken with or without food. Patients with liver problems may require a lower dosage.

Ingredients
The active ingredient in Koselugo is selumetinib.
Inactive ingredients in the 10 mg capsule include vitamin E polyethylene glycol succinate, hypromellose, carrageenan, potassium chloride, titanium dioxide, carnauba wax, purified water, shellac, iron oxide black, propylene glycol, and ammonium hydroxide.
Inactive ingredients in the 25 mg capsule include vitamin E polyethylene glycol succinate, hypromellose, carrageenan, potassium chloride, titanium dioxide, FD&C blue 2, ferric oxide yellow, purified water, carnauba wax and/or cornstarch, ferric oxide red, ferric oxide yellow, FD&C Blue 2 aluminum lake, shellac, and glyceryl monooleate.
Contraindications
According to the most recent Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications.
Cautions
- Before patients begin treatment with Koselugo, the following should be discussed with the treating physician:
- All the medications the patient takes, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
- The patient’s allergies
- The patient’s current health problems and past medical history
- If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding
- Koselugo contains the following warnings and precautions:
- Cardiomyopathy
- Eye problems
- Stomach/intestinal problems
- Skin problems
- Increased creatine phosphokinase and rhabdomyolysis, which is the breakdown of muscle tissue that releases harmful proteins into the blood
- Increased vitamin E and bleeding risk
Side Effects
Vomiting, rash, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, dry skin, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, fever, acneiform rash, stomatitis, headache, nail inflammation/infection, and itching are the most common Koselugo side effects; however, other side effects may also occur.
Patients should contact a doctor right away if they have side effects that bother them or won’t go away.
