Kirsty (Insulin Aspart)

What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Contraindications

Patients with low blood sugar or who are allergic to Kirsty should not use it.

    Cautions

    • Kirsty contains the following serious warnings and precautions:
      • Low blood sugar is the most common side effect of insulin. All patients with diabetes who are being treated with insulin should monitor their blood sugar levels.
      • Low or high blood sugar that is not corrected may cause loss of consciousness, coma, or death.
      • Transferring from one insulin to another should only occur under medical supervision.
      • Some insulin products work quickly and last only for a short time. These types of insulins should only be administered immediately (5-10 minutes) before a meal or immediately after a meal.
      • Short-acting insulin should be used with long-acting insulin or an insulin pump to adequately manage blood sugar.
      • Do not mix insulin products unless indicated and done under medical supervision.
      • Do not use insulin if it is not clear and colorless or if you see solid particles on the wall of the vial or cartridge.
    • Before you or your child begins treatment with Kirsty, talk to a healthcare provider about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you or your child takes
      • You or your child’s allergies
      • You or your child’s current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Kirsty affects you.
    • Low potassium levels can occur.
    • Allergic reactions, including injection site reactions and systemic reactions, can occur. Immediately seek medical care if you or your child experiences a rash, shortness of breath, wheezing, and low blood pressure.
    • Insulin antibodies may form, resulting in the need for a dose adjustment.
    • Loss of fatty tissue can occur.

    Side Effects

Low blood sugar is the most common side effect of Kirsty. However, other side effects may also occur. Immediately inform your healthcare provider of side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
