Description
Imodium (loperamide hydrochloride) is used to manage and relieve acute nonspecific diarrhea in patients who are at least 2 years of age. It is also used to treat chronic diarrhea in adults who have inflammatory bowel disease. Immodium is also used to decrease the volume of discharge from ileostomies.
Imodium comes in 2 mg oral capsules.
Generic Imodium is loperamide hydrochloride.
Directions
Use Imodium as directed by your doctor. Contact your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions or concerns.
The Imodium dose depends on the condition being treated. In pediatric patients, the recommended dose depends on age and weight. Your doctor can recommend an appropriate dose for you.
Ingredients
Loperamide hydrochloride is the active ingredient in Imodium pills. Inactive ingredients include lactose, cornstarch, talc, magnesium stearate, and FD&C Yellow No. 6.
Contraindications
Imodium should not be used in patients:
- Who are younger than 2 years of age
- Who have a known allergy to loperamide or to any of its ingredients or excipients
- With stomach pain without diarrhea
- With acute dysentery, which is characterized by bloody stools and a high fever
- With acute ulcerative colitis
- With bacterial enterocolitis
- With pseudomembranous colitis (e.g., Clostridium difficile) associated with the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics
Cautions
Imodium contains the following Boxed Warnings:
- Using doses of Imodium that exceed recommended dosing is associated with Torsades de Pointes, cardiac arrest, and death.
- Imodium should not be given to patients younger than 2 years of age.
- Do not take doses of Imodium that are higher than the recommended dose due to the risk of serious cardiac adverse reactions.
- Before you start treatment with Imodium, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health conditions and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Although they’re rare, allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock can occur.
- Imodium should be used with caution in patients with liver problems.
- If you are taking Imodium and have acute diarrhea that has not improved after 48 hours, contact your doctor.
- If you see blood in your stools, develop a fever, or have abdominal swelling, contact your doctor right away.
- Avoid driving, operating machinery, or participating in other hazardous activities until you know how Imodium affects you.
Side Effects
Constipation, dizziness, nausea, and stomach cramps are possible side effects of Imodium; however, other side effects may also occur. Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t resolve.
