Description
Hypurin NPH Insulin, Pork is used to treat diabetic patients who are already using an animal-derived insulin and to treat new diabetic patients who cannot tolerate recombinant human insulin or whose diabetes is not adequately controlled by recombinant human insulin. It is available with a prescription.
Hypurin NPH Insulin comes as suspension for injection and contains 100 International Units per mL.
Directions
Use Hypurin NPH Insulin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Read the information leaflet that comes with your prescription. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.
Your healthcare provider will teach you how to properly inject Hypurin NPH Insulin and how much you should inject. The insulin should be injected underneath the skin or into the muscle of the upper arms, thighs, buttocks, or lower abdomen. Use a different injection site each week. Do not inject into a vein.
You should use a new needle for each injection. Your needles and syringes should not be shared with another person.
Storage:
- Unopened product can last 36 months
- After the first dose, refrigerate the product at temperatures of 2°C to 8°C for up to 28 days. Do not freeze.
Ingredients
Isophane (Porcine) is contained in Hypurin NPH Insulin.
Inactive ingredients include glycerol, metacresol, phenol, protamine sulphate, sodium phosphate, water for injection, and zinc (as chloride).
Contraindications
Patients who have signs of low blood glucose or who are allergic to any of the ingredients or excipients in Hypurin NPH Insulin should not use the medication.
Cautions
Hypurin NPH Insulin contains the following Warnings:
- Low blood sugar is the most common side effect associated with insulin therapy. Patients should monitor their blood or urinary glucose levels.
- Low or high blood sugar that is not corrected can cause loss of consciousness, coma, or even death.
- Dose adjustments may be needed for patients who transfer to Hypurin Pork insulins from other commercially available preparations.
- Do not inject Hypurin NPH Insulin into a vein.
- You may mix Hypurin NPH Insulin with Hypurin Regular Insulin in the same syringe, in which case Hypurin Regular Insulin should be drawn up first. Immediately use once the contents have been drawn up.
- Do not use the vial if the contents are frozen or if it contains lumps that do not disperse on mixing.
- Before you start using Hypurin NPH Insulin, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Hypurin NPH Insulin’s duration of action may vary depending on dose, injection site, blood flow, temperature, and level of physical activity.
- Low potassium levels in the blood can occur.
- Patients who have an illness, are going through puberty, or have emotional upset may need additional insulin.
- Each vial is restricted to one patient.
- Taking thiazolidinediones (TZDs) alone or with other diabetic medications can cause heart failure and edema. Using insulin with TZDs is not an approved treatment of type 2 diabetes.
- Low blood sugar is the most frequent side effect of insulin and can cause fatigue, sweating, heart palpitations, disturbed behavior, hunger, convulsions, loss of consciousness, and even death. Monitor your blood sugar as recommended and follow your healthcare provider’s instructions on correcting low blood sugar levels.
- Injection site reactions such as redness, itching, and swelling can occur.
- Hypersensitivity and rarely, anaphylaxis, can occur. Seek medical care right away if you have trouble breathing, a rapid heart rate, swelling, or any other sign or symptom of an allergic reaction.
- Hypurin NPH Insulin contains phenol, m-cresol, zinc, and protamine, which can cause allergic reactions in some people.
- Nerve pain can occur.
- Do not mix Hypurin NPH Insulin with any other insulins (except Hypurin Regular Insulin).
Side Effects
Low blood sugar, low potassium levels, and weight gain are common side effects of Hypurin NPH Insulin. However, these are not all the side effects that can occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
