Description
Herceptin (trastuzumab) is used to treat breast cancer.
Herceptin is administered via an intravenous infusion.

Trastuzumab is the active ingredient in Herceptin infusion.
Contraindications
There are no contraindications, or reasons why a person should not receive Herceptin, per the most recent Prescribing Information. Talk to your healthcare provider about whether Herceptin is right for you.
Cautions
- Herceptin contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
- Herceptin can cause heart failure manifesting as congestive heart failure and decreased left ventricular ejection fraction. Patients who are also receiving anthracyclines are at greatest risk. Heart function before and during treatment should be evaluated, and Herceptin should be stopped for cardiomyopathy.
- Infusion reactions and lung problems can occur. Herceptin should be stopped in cases of anaphylaxis, angioedema (swelling), interstitial pneumonitis, or acute respiratory distress syndrome.
- Herceptin can cause harm to an unborn baby, including death. Patients should have knowledge of these risks and should be advised on the use of effective contraception.
- Before you begin treatment with Herceptin, consult your healthcare provider about:
- All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Worsening of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, or a decrease in a type of white blood cell known as neutrophils, can occur.
Side Effects
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, chills, infection, congestive heart failure, sleep problems, cough, rash, fatigue, and anemia are some common Herceptin side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Immediately contact your healthcare provider if you experience side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
