Description
Hemlibra (emicizumab-kxwh) is an injectable medication that is prescribed to adults and pediatric patients with hemophilia A to prevent or help them have fewer bleeding episodes.
Hemlibra is available in single-dose vials in the following concentrations:
- 30 mg/mL
- 60 mg/0.4 mL
- 105 mg/0.7 mL
- 150 mg/mL
- 300 mg/2 mL
Directions
Your healthcare provider will determine appropriate Hemlibra dosing and a dosing schedule for you.
Hemlibra should be injected underneath the skin of the upper outer arms, thighs, or abdomen. After receiving proper training on the preparation, administration, and disposal of Hemlibra, you or a caregiver may administer Hemlibra.
For further instructions for use, you may refer to the information leaflet that comes with your prescription. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Storing Hemlibra:
Hemlibra vials should be refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) in the original carton and away from light. Do not freeze or shake. Properly throw away used vials, needles, and syringes after use.
Hemlibra vials that have not been opened may be stored at 30°C (86°F) or lower for up to 7 days.
Do not share needles or syringes with other people.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Hemlibra is emicizumab-kxwh. Inactive ingredients include L-arginine, L-histidine, poloxamer 188, and L-aspartic acid.
Contraindications
According to the most recent Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications, or reasons why a person should not receive Hemlibra. However, patients should consult with their healthcare provider about whether Hemlibra is an appropriate treatment option for them.
Cautions
- Hemlibra contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
- Thrombotic microangiopathy and thrombotic events have occurred when on average a cumulative amount of >100 U/kg/24 hours of activated prothrombin complex concentrate (aPCC) was administered for at least 24 hours to patients receiving Hemlibra. Patients receiving aPCC should be monitored for these events. If symptoms occur, aPCC should be stopped and Hemlibra dosing should be suspended.
- Before you begin Hemlibra therapy, talk to your healthcare provider about:
- All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Your immune system may create antibodies against Hemlibra, which can affect how well Hemlibra works.
- Hemlibra may affect coagulation laboratory tests.
Side Effects
Injection site reactions, headache, and joint pain are common Hemlibra side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
