Description
Ferriprox is a prescription medication used to treat iron overload from blood transfusions in adult and pediatric patients who are at least 8 years of age and have thalassemia syndromes, sickle cell disease, or other anemias.
Ferriprox comes in functionally scored 500 mg (three times a day) and 1000 mg tablets (twice a day and three times a day) for oral administration.
Directions
Take Ferriprox exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Your doctor will determine an appropriate dose for you, as the tablets come in three different formulations and have distinct identifying characteristics.
Store Ferriprox tablets between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) and out of reach of children.
Ingredients
Deferiprone is the active ingredient in Ferriprox.
The inactive ingredients in the 500 mg tablets include microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, colloidal silicon dioxide, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide.
The inactive ingredients in the 1000 mg tablets (twice a day) include hypromellose acetate succinate, magnesium oxide, colloidal silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate, triethyl citrate, talc, titanium dioxide, and methacrylic acid and ethyl acrylate copolymer.
The inactive ingredients in the 1000 mg tablets (three times a day) include methylcellulose, crospovidone, and magnesium stearate; Coating - hypromellose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, macrogol, and titanium dioxide.
Contraindications
Patients who are allergic to deferiprone to any of the excipients in the medication should not take Ferriprox.
Cautions
Ferriprox is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
- Agranulocytosis can occur, which can lead to serious infections and death. Neutropenia may occur before agranulocytosis develops.
- The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) should be measured before starting Ferriprox; regular monitoring should occur during therapy.
- Ferriprox should be stopped if neutropenia develops.
- Ferriprox should be stopped if infection develops; the ANC should be more frequently monitored.
- Patients who experience any symptoms of an infection should consult their doctor right away.
- Before you start taking Ferriprox, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, including supplements and vitamins
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Liver enzymes may increase during Ferriprox treatment; therefore, they should be monitored monthly.
- A deficiency in zinc may occur during Ferriprox treatment; supplements may be needed.
- Ferriprox can cause harm to an unborn baby. Effective birth control methods should be used during treatment and for at least 6 months after receiving the last dose.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, joint pain, increased liver enzymes, abnormal white blood cell counts, fever, bone pain, headache, pain in the arms and legs, sickle cell anemia with crisis, back pain, mouth and throat pain, common cold, and cough are common Ferriprox side effects. However, these are not all the side effects that can occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
