What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

    Description

    Eryped (erythromycin ethylsuccinate) is a prescription medication that is used to treat infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria; these infections include:

    • Upper respiratory tract infections
    • Lower respiratory tract infections
    • Listeriosis
    • Whooping cough
    • Skin infections
    • Diphtheria
    • Erythrasma
    • Intestinal amebiasis
    • Acute pelvic inflammatory disease
    • Syphilis
    • Conjunctivitis in newborns
    • Pneumonia in infants
    • Urogenital infections in pregnancy
    • Nongonococcal urethritis
    • Legionnaires Disease
    • Rheumatic fever (prevention of initial and recurrent attacks)

    Eryped comes in an oral suspension in the following strengths:

    • Eryped (erythromycin ethylsuccinate) 200 mg erythromycin/5 mL
    • Eryped (erythromycin ethylsuccinate) 400 mg erythromycin/5 mL
    • Eryped Drops (100 mg erythromycin/2.5 mL (dropperful))

    Directions

    Use Eryped exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. It’s important that you finish the full course of treatment, even if you start to feel better.

    Your dose will depend on your age, weight, and infection being treated. Your doctor will tell you how much medication you should take, how often, and for how long.

    Store at or below 25°C (77°F) and use within 35 days. You do not need to refrigerate.

    Ingredients

    Erythromycin is the active ingredient in Eryped. Inactive ingredients include caramel, polysorbate, sodium citrate, sucrose, xanthan gum, and artificial flavors.

    Contraindications

    Eryped should not be used in patients who are allergic to the medication. It should also not be used in patients who are taking terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, ergotamine, or dihydroergotamine. Ask your doctor if you are unsure whether you take these medications.

    Cautions

    • Before you start taking Eryped, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Liver problems have been reported in patients taking oral erythromycin.
    • Erythromycin may not adequately reach the fetus to prevent congenital syphilis; therefore, infants born to women treated with Eryped during pregnancy should receive an appropriate treatment regimen with penicillin.
    • Eryped, like many antibiotics, may cause C. difficile, a bacterium that causes diarrhea.
    • Some patients have experienced worsening symptoms of myasthenia gravis or new onset of symptoms of myasthenic syndrome while taking erythromycin.
    • Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis has occurred in infants being treated with erythromycin. If vomiting or irritability occurs while feeding, parents should contact their doctor immediately.
    • Taking erythromycin for a long period of time or repeatedly can cause a superinfection.

    Side Effects

    Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and anorexia are common Eryped side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that worry you or won’t go away.
