Description
Emtriva (emtricitabine) is a prescription medication used with other therapies to treat HIV-1 infection.
Emtriva is available in oral 200 mg oral capsules and a 10 mg/mL oral solution.
Directions
Take Emtriva exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Carefully read the information leaflet that comes with your prescription.
Your doctor will determine an appropriate dosage for you based on your age, weight, and kidney function.

Storing Emtriva:
Keep Emtriva capsules stored in the original container at 25°C (77°F) and out of reach of children.
Keep Emtriva oral solution refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). If you store it at 25°C (77°F), it should be used within 3 months.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Emtriva is emtricitabine.
Inactive ingredients in Emtriva 200 mg capsules include crospovidone, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, titanium dioxide, gelatin, and FD&C blue No. 2.
Inactive ingredients in the oral solution include cotton candy flavor, FD&C yellow No. 6, edetate disodium, methylparaben and propylparaben (preservatives), sodium phosphate (monobasic), propylene glycol, water, and xylitol (sweetener). Sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid may be added for pH balance.
Contraindications
Patients with an allergy to any of Emtriva’s ingredients should avoid taking it.
Cautions
Emtriva contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
- Severe worsening of hepatitis B virus (HBV) can occur in patients with both HIV-1 and HBV who have stopped using Emtriva. Liver function should be closely monitored in these patients. Treatment for HBV may be needed.
- Before you begin treatment with Emtriva, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Emtriva may cause immune system problems, lactic acidosis, and liver enlargement with fat buildup in the liver.
Side Effects
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, depression, trouble sleeping, abnormal dreams, rash, abdominal pain, weakness, increased cough, stuffy nose, and skin hyperpigmentation are common Emtriva side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Immediately inform your doctor of side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
