    Diacomit (stiripentol) is a prescription medication for treating seizures due to Dravet syndrome in patients who are at least 6 months old, weigh at least 7 kg, and are taking clobazam.

    Directions

    You or your child should take Diacomit exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The doctor will determine an appropriate Diacomit dosage based on weight and age.

    Do not open or break the capsules; swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water; take with a meal.

    The powder for oral suspension should be mixed in a glass of water; take immediately after mixing and during a meal.

    Store Diacomit capsules and oral suspension in a dry place, protected from light, between 20oC and 25oC (68oF and 77oF). Keep out of reach of children.

    Ingredients

    The active ingredient in Diacomit is stiripentol.

    Inactive ingredients in the capsules include erythrosine (250 mg capsule only), gelatin, indigotine (250 mg capsule only), magnesium stearate, povidone, sodium starch glycolate, and titanium dioxide.

    Inactive ingredients in the oral suspension include aspartame, carmellose sodium, erythrosine, glucose, hydroxyethylcellulose, povidone, sodium starch glycolate, sorbitol, titanium dioxide, and fruit flavor (acacia, Bergamot oil, hypromellose, maltodextrin, sorbitol, and vanillin).

    Contraindications

    According to the most recent Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications to taking Diacomit.

    Cautions

    • Before you or your child starts taking Diacomit, tell the doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you or your child takes
      • Your or your child’s allergies
      • Your or your child’s current health problems and past medical history
      • Your or your child’s pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Diacomit is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
      • Drowsiness/excessive sleepiness
      • Appetite and weight loss
      • Low neutrophil and platelet counts
      • Increased risk of seizure frequency and status epilepticus if discontinued abruptly; Diacomit should be withdrawn gradually
      • The oral suspension contains phenylalanine, which may be associated with risks in patients with phenylketonuria
      • Suicidal behavior and ideation

    Side Effects

    Drowsiness/excessive sleepiness, appetite loss, weight loss, agitation, impaired coordination, decreased muscle tone, nausea, tremor, slurred speech, and trouble sleeping are some Diacomit side effects. Other side effects may also occur.

    Immediately notify a doctor about any side effects that bother you or your child or side effects that won’t go away.
