Description
Demadex (torsemide) is a medication known as a diuretic, or water pill, that is used to treat edema (swelling) associated with congestive heart failure (CHF), kidney disease, or liver disease. It is also used to treat high blood pressure.
Demadex is available in 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 100 mg oral tablets.
Directions
Take Demadex exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about the medication.
Your doctor will tell you how much Demadex you should take based on the condition being treated and how well you tolerate it.
Patients with CHF generally start taking Demadex 10 mg or 20 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be adjusted by the doctor as necessary.
Patients with kidney failure generally start taking Demadex 20 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be adjusted by the doctor as necessary.
Patients with liver cirrhosis generally start taking Demadex 5 mg or 10 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be adjusted by the doctor as necessary.
Patients with high blood pressure generally start taking Demadex 5 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be adjusted by the doctor as necessary.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Demadex medication is torsemide, a loop diuretic. It works by helping your body get rid of extra sodium, chloride, and water through urination. Inactive ingredients include lactose NF, crospovidone NF, povidone USP, microcrystalline cellulose NF, and magnesium stearate NF.
Contraindications
Demadex should not be used in patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients or to sulfonylureas.
Cautions
- Before you start treatment with Demadex, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Patients with liver cirrhosis and swelling should exercise caution when taking Demadex, as sudden changes in fluid and electrolyte balance may result in liver coma.
- Ringing in the ears and hearing loss (usually reversible) can occur.
- Patients taking diuretics may develop dryness of the mouth, thirst, weakness, lethargy, drowsiness, restlessness, muscle pains or cramps, muscular fatigue, low blood pressure, low urine output, rapid heart rate, nausea, and vomiting. These are symptoms of electrolyte imbalance, low volume, and abnormally high amounts of waste in the body.
- Demadex may cause abnormal electrolyte levels in the blood.
- Demadex may cause an elevation in other lab values, including blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, and uric acid.
- Demadex may cause decreased blood cell counts.
Side Effects
Headache, excessive urination, and dizziness are possible Demadex side effects; however, these are not the only side effects that can occur. Tell your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
