What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Demadex is available in 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 100 mg oral tablets.

    Directions

Take Demadex exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about the medication.

Your doctor will tell you how much Demadex you should take based on the condition being treated and how well you tolerate it.

Patients with CHF generally start taking Demadex 10 mg or 20 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be adjusted by the doctor as necessary.

Patients with kidney failure generally start taking Demadex 20 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be adjusted by the doctor as necessary.

Patients with high blood pressure generally start taking Demadex 5 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be adjusted by the doctor as necessary.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Demadex medication is torsemide, a loop diuretic. It works by helping your body get rid of extra sodium, chloride, and water through urination. Inactive ingredients include lactose NF, crospovidone NF, povidone USP, microcrystalline cellulose NF, and magnesium stearate NF.

    Contraindications

Demadex should not be used in patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients or to sulfonylureas.

    Cautions

    • Before you start treatment with Demadex, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Patients with liver cirrhosis and swelling should exercise caution when taking Demadex, as sudden changes in fluid and electrolyte balance may result in liver coma.
    • Ringing in the ears and hearing loss (usually reversible) can occur.
    • Patients taking diuretics may develop dryness of the mouth, thirst, weakness, lethargy, drowsiness, restlessness, muscle pains or cramps, muscular fatigue, low blood pressure, low urine output, rapid heart rate, nausea, and vomiting. These are symptoms of electrolyte imbalance, low volume, and abnormally high amounts of waste in the body.
    • Demadex may cause abnormal electrolyte levels in the blood.
    • Demadex may cause an elevation in other lab values, including blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, and uric acid.
    • Demadex may cause decreased blood cell counts.

    Side Effects

Headache, excessive urination, and dizziness are possible Demadex side effects; however, these are not the only side effects that can occur. Tell your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
