What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Cyclocort is a cream that is used on the skin only.

    Directions

Use Cyclocort as directed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. The least effective amount should be applied for the shortest duration.

    Recommended dosing:

Apply a thin layer and gently rub it into the affected area(s) of the skin one to two times a day.

Do not use Cyclort for more than 5 days on the face, armpit, scrotum, and scalp.

Do not use Cyclort for more than 2 to 3 weeks on the body.

    Occlusive dressings are not recommended.

Do not use Cyclocort in or around the eyes, mouth, or vagina.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Cyclocort cream is amcinonide. Inactive ingredients include benzyl alcohol, emulsifying wax, glycerin, isopropyl palmitate, lactic acid, purified water, and sorbitol solution.

    Contraindications

Patients who are allergic to Cyclocort or other corticosteroids should not use Cyclocort.

Patients with viral skin lesions, bacterial or fungal skin infections, parasitic infections, skin conditions associated with tuberculosis or syphilis, eruptions following vaccinations, itching without inflammation, skin inflammation around the mouth, rosacea, acne, or perianal and genital itching should not use Cyclocort.

Patients should not use Cyclocort in the eye.

    Cautions

    • Before you begin using Cyclocort, tell your doctor about:
    • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use, including other lotions, creams, and ointments
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions and past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Caution should be used in patients who have chronic leg ulcers or skin diseases with impaired circulation.
    • Cushing’s syndrome and reversible hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression can occur due to systemic absorption, resulting in glucocorticoid insufficiency. Applying the cream over large body surface areas, applying the cream where two skin areas touch or rub against each other, using the cream for a long period of time, applying the cream frequently, applying the cream to thin skin areas or on broken skin, or using occlusive dressings can increase systemic absorption.
    • The risk of infections can be increased with the use of topical corticosteroids. If a skin infection occurs, Cyclocort should be stopped and treatment should be initiated.
    • Caution should be used in patients with eye lesions, as systemic absorption of the cream may cause increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma, or cataracts.
    • Allergic reactions can occur.
    • Caution should be used in patients with psoriasis.
    • Indented, red streaks on the skin or skin breakdown can occur if topical corticosteroids are used for a long period of time.

    Side Effects

Cyclocort cream is associated with the following side effects: eye problems, stomach pain, application site irritation or pain, allergic reactions, secondary infection, decreased glucose tolerance, skin disorders, and blood clots. However, these are not all the side effects that may occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
