What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

    Ingredients

    The active ingredient in Cotellic is cobimetinib.

    Inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, polyvinyl alcohol, titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol 3350, and talc.

    Contraindications

    According to the most recent Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications to taking Cotellic.

    Cautions

    • Before you begin Cotellic treatment, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Cotellic is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
      • The development of new cancers
      • Major bleeding
      • Heart muscle disease
      • Severe skin rashes
      • Eye problems, including retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion
      • Liver problems
      • Breakdown of muscle tissue, resulting in the release of substances in the blood that can cause kidney damage
      • Severe photosensitivity; sun exposure should be avoided
      • Harm to an unborn baby; females who are capable of reproducing should use effective contraceptive methods during Cotellic treatment and for 2 weeks after taking the final dose
      • Breastfeeding is not recommended

    Side Effects

    Unresectable or metastatic melanoma: Diarrhea, photosensitivity, nausea, fever, vomiting, abnormal labs (increased GGT, CPK, and liver enzymes and decreased phosphorus, sodium, and lymphocytes) are the most common Cotellic side effects; however, other side effects may also occur.

    Histiocytic neoplasms: Acne, skin conditions, diarrhea, infection, fatigue, nausea, swelling, dry skin, skin rash, itching, indigestion, vomiting, shortness of breath, urinary tract infections, anemia, and abnormal labs (decreased sodium, potassium, calcium, lymphocytes, and leukocytes and increased CPK, creatinine, and liver enzymes) are the most common Cotellic side effects; however, other side effects may also occur.

    Immediately inform your doctor of any side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
