Directions
Ceftin Suspension should be taken by mouth with food, as directed by a healthcare professional, usually twice daily or every 12 hours. The Ceftin oral suspension dosage depends on the individual's medical condition and response to treatment. Measure liquid doses carefully, using the measuring device that comes with the medication. If there is no measuring device provided, it is recommended to ask a pharmacist for a suitable device to measure Ceftin Suspension.
Continue taking Ceftin as instructed by your doctor or healthcare provider, even if you start to feel better. Do not adjust the dose unless directed by a healthcare professional. Shake the bottle before using it to make sure the suspension is properly mixed. It is recommended to take the oral suspension with food to reduce the risk of stomach upset and improve absorption into the body.
Ingredients
The main active ingredient in Ceftin Suspension is Cefuroxime axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. In addition to the active ingredient, Ceftin Suspension may contain several inactive ingredients that contribute to the formulation's stability, appearance, and taste.
Inactive ingredients may include aspartame, hypromellose phthalate, mannitol, methacrylic acid copolymer, monosodium citrate, peppermint flavor, silicon dioxide, sodium benzoate, sodium chloride, sucrose, tutti frutti flavor, and xanthan gum. These components help to create a palatable oral suspension that is easy to administer.
Contraindications
Ceftin Suspension is an effective antibacterial medication, but it is not appropriate for everyone. Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:
- Allergy to Cefuroxime or any other component of Ceftin Suspension
- Previous severe allergic reaction to any other cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics
Cautions
- Before using Ceftin Suspension, it is important to be aware of certain precautions. Discuss the following with your doctor or healthcare provider before starting treatment:
- Any medications or medical conditions you have
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions, sometimes fatal, have been reported with Ceftin, especially in those with a history of beta-lactam allergies. Inform your healthcare provider of past reactions and discontinue Ceftin if an allergic reaction occurs.
- Antibacterial agents, including Ceftin, may lead to Clostridioides difficile-Associated Diarrhea (CDAD) ranging from mild to severe.
- During Ceftin therapy, there's a risk of superinfections with fungal or bacterial pathogens.
- Inappropriate use of Ceftin, without a confirmed bacterial infection, may increase the risk of drug-resistant bacteria development.
- Ceftin oral suspension contains phenylalanine; the amount varies based on the concentration. This can be a concern for individuals with phenylketonuria.
- Ceftin may interfere with certain glucose tests, producing false results. Inform your healthcare provider if you're undergoing glucose tests while on Ceftin.
Side Effects
Ceftin Suspension may cause side effects. Common Ceftin oral suspension side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Some patients may also experience a strange taste in the mouth, diaper rash in young children, dizziness, and drowsiness, especially with higher doses. You may want to be aware of these possible side effects and monitor for any changes in symptoms.
While less common, Ceftin Suspension may also cause more serious side effects that require immediate medical attention. These can include black, tarry stools, chest pain, and shortness of breath. If you or a loved one is taking Ceftin Suspension and experiences any serious side effects, seek medical advice immediately.
