Description
Cabometyx is a medication used to treat advanced kidney cancer, liver cancer, and differentiated thyroid cancer.
Cabometyx comes in 20 mg, 40 mg, and 60 mg oral tablets.
Directions
Take Cabometyx exactly as your doctor has prescribed. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Your doctor will determine an appropriate dose for you. Generally, patients take one tablet by mouth once daily.
Ingredients
Cabozantinib is the active ingredient in Cabometyx. Microcrystalline cellulose, lactose anhydrous, hydroxypropyl cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate are inactive ingredients included.
Contraindications
According to the most recent Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications, or no conditions in which a person cannot take Cabometyx.
Cautions
- Before you begin receiving treatment with Cabometyx, tell your doctor:
- About all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- About your allergies
- About your current health conditions and past medical history
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Cabometyx should not be administered in patients with a recent history of hemorrhage.
- Gastrointestinal perforation and fistulas can occur during treatment with Cabometyx.
- The risk of thrombotic events (i.e., heart attack, blood clots) is increased with Cabometyx use.
- Cabometyx can cause high blood pressure that can become dangerously high. Cabometyx should not be given to patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure.
- Cabometyx can cause diarrhea.
- Cabometyx can cause hand-foot syndrome, or redness and swelling of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
- Cabometyx can cause liver toxicity, especially when taken with nivolumab.
- Cabometyx can cause adrenal insufficiency.
- Cabometyx can cause protein in the urine.
- Cabometyx can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw which can result in jaw pain, bone infection, bone inflammation, bone erosion, tooth or periodontal infection, toothache, gingival ulceration or erosion, and slow healing of the mouth or jaw after dental surgery.
- Cabometyx can cause wound complications, including impaired wound healing.
- Cabometyx can cause Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome (RPLS), a condition that results in headaches, vision problems, mental changes, seizures, and brain swelling.
- Cabometyx can cause thyroid problems.
- Cabometyx can cause low calcium levels in the blood.
- Cabometyx may cause harm to an unborn baby. Effective birth control methods should be used during treatment with Cabometyx and for 4 months after taking the last dose.
Side Effects
Diarrhea, fatigue, hand-foot syndrome, decreased appetite, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and constipation are common Cabometyx side effects. However, these are not the only side effects that can occur. Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
