What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Bonjesta is a medication used to help reduce nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. It combines two ingredients: Doxylamine Succinate, which is an antihistamine that helps calm the body, and Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, a form of Vitamin B6 that supports the body's metabolism. Bonjesta comes in an extended-release tablet, meaning it works gradually to provide relief throughout the day and night. Pregnant women typically take Bonjesta when other methods have not been effective in easing their symptoms.

    Directions

Bonjesta should be taken by mouth, following the prescribed dosage from a healthcare provider. On the first day, individuals typically take one extended-release tablet at bedtime. If symptoms persist, on the second day, the dosage may increase to one tablet in the morning and one at bedtime. Remember to swallow the tablet whole with water. Avoid breaking or chewing it.

    Ingredients

The active ingredients in Bonjesta are Doxylamine and Pyridoxine.

    Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

    • Known hypersensitivity to Bonjesta ingredients
    • Allergic reactions to ethanolamine derivative antihistamines
    • Sensitivity to any inactive ingredients in the formulation
    • Taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, a type of medication for depression

    Cautions

    • Before beginning treatment with Bonjesta, be sure to inform your healthcare provider about the following:
      • Any medical conditions you currently have
      • Any allergies
      • All medications you are currently taking
      • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Bonjesta can cause significant drowsiness. You should avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or doing anything that requires full mental alertness until your healthcare provider gives you the go-ahead.
    • Bonjesta should not be used with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants, as this can lead to extreme drowsiness and increase the risk of falls or accidents.
    • If you have conditions like increased eye pressure (glaucoma), peptic ulcers, stomach blockages, or bladder issues, you should be cautious when taking Bonjesta due to its anticholinergic effects.
    • There have been reports of false positives for methadone, opiates, and PCP in urine screenings while using Bonjesta. Be aware if you're undergoing drug testing.

    Side Effects

The most common Bonjesta side effect is drowsiness. You may feel very sleepy or tired while taking this medication. It is important to avoid activities that require full attention, such as driving or operating heavy machinery, unless your healthcare provider has advised otherwise. Drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness, such as certain pain relievers or sleep aids, can make this side effect worse.

In rare cases, Bonjesta may cause more severe drowsiness, leading to accidents or falls, especially if taken with alcohol or other sedatives. Additionally, Bonjesta can lead to false positives in urine drug screening tests for substances like methadone, opiates, and PCP. If you experience severe drowsiness or any concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Always inform medical personnel if you're taking Bonjesta before any drug testing.
