Description
Bijuva contains estradiol and progesterone. It is prescribed to help manage symptoms of menopause.
Bijuva comes in oral capsules containing 0.5 mg estradiol/100 mg progesterone and 1 mg estradiol/100 mg progesterone.
Directions
Take Bijuva exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you have about the medication.
The recommended Bijuva dosage is to take one capsule by mouth every evening with food.
Keep out of reach of children.
Store at 20°C to 25ºC (68°F to 77ºF).
Ingredients
Estradiol and progesterone are the active ingredients in each Bijuva capsule. Inactive ingredients include ammonium hydroxide, ethanol, ethyl acetate, FD&C Red #40, gelatin, glycerin, hydrolyzed gelatin, isopropyl alcohol, lauroyl polyoxyl-32 glycerides, lecithin, medium chain mono and di-glycerides, medium chain triglycerides, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl acetate phthalate, propylene glycol, purified water, and titanium dioxide.
Contraindications
Women with any of the following should not take Bijuva:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding that is undiagnosed
- Breast cancer or a history of breast cancer
- Estrogen-dependent neoplasia
- Blood clots or history of blood clots
- Arterial thromboembolic disease (stroke and MI) or a history of these conditions
- Known anaphylactic reaction, angioedema, or allergy to the medication
- Liver problems or disease
- Protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency, or other known thrombophilic disorders
Cautions
Bijuva is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warnings:
Estrogen Plus Progestin Therapy
- Increased risks of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack
- Increased risks of invasive breast cancer
- Increased risk of probable dementia in postmenopausal women 65 years of age and older
- Estrogen plus progestogen therapy should not be used to prevent cardiovascular disease or dementia
Estrogen-Alone Therapy
- Increased risk of endometrial cancer in a woman with a uterus who uses unopposed estrogens
- Increased risks of stroke and blood clots
- Increased risk of probable dementia in postmenopausal women 65 years of age and older
- Estrogen should not be used to prevent cardiovascular disease or dementia
- Before you begin taking Bijuva, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- The risk of gallbladder disease is increased with estrogen use.
- If you have high calcium levels, vision loss, severe high cholesterol levels, or yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, estrogen should be stopped.
- Thyroid function should be monitored in women who require thyroid replacement therapy.
Side Effects
Breast tenderness, headache, nausea, vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, and pelvic pain are some Bijuva side effects. These are not all the side effects that can occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
