Description
Bicillin L-A (penicillin G benzathine injectable suspension) is an intramuscular injectable medication used to treat or prevent certain susceptible bacterial infections.
Bicillin L-A comes in disposable, single-use syringes.

Your doctor or other healthcare provider will inject Bicillin L-A into the muscle of the buttocks or hip.
Ingredients
Penicillin G benzathine, sodium citrate buffer and, as w/v, approximately 0.65% sodium citrate, 0.59% povidone, 0.54% carboxymethylcellulose sodium, 0.53% lecithin, 0.12% methylparaben, and 0.013% propylparaben are contained in Bicillin L-A.
Contraindications
Bicillin L-A should not be administered to patients who have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin.
Cautions
Bicillin L-A contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
- Do not use intravenously or mix with other intravenous solutions. Inadvertent intravenous administration of Bicillin L-A has occurred, which has led to cardiorespiratory arrest and death.
- Before you receive a Bicillin L-A injection, tell your doctor:
- About all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- About your allergies
- About your current health conditions and past medical history
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred with Bicillin L-A use. Patients who have ever had a reaction to penicillin or have been sensitive to multiple allergens are at increased risk. If a patient develops a severe allergic reaction, prompt emergency care should be obtained.
- Severe cutaneous reactions may occur with Bicillin L-A treatment.
- Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) associated with diarrhea may occur with Bicillin L-A treatment.
Side Effects
Allergic reactions, gastrointestinal problems, anemia, abnormal blood cell counts, injection site reactions, abnormal heart rhythms, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision are some side effects associated with Bicillin L-A. However, these are not the only side effects that can occur. Immediately call your doctor if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
