Description
Baqsimi (glucagon) is a medication used intranasally to treat severe low blood sugar levels in diabetic adults and pediatric patients who are at least 4 years old.
Baqsimi is available as a nasal powder in a device used intranasally that contains one dose of glucagon 3 mg.
Directions
Use Baqsimi as prescribed by your doctor. Carefully read the information and instructions for use that come with your prescription. Patients and their caregivers should be educated on the signs and symptoms of low blood sugar. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have about the medication.
Recommended dosing - one actuation of the intranasal device into one nostril: Insert the tip of the intranasal device into one nostril. Press down on the device plunger until you no longer see the green line. You do not need to inhale the dose. Call for emergency care as soon as the dose is administered.
Ingredients
Baqsimi contains glucagon. Betadex and dodecylphosphocholine are the excipients.
Contraindications
Patients with pheochromocytoma, insulinoma, or an allergy to glucagon or to any of the excipients in Baqsimi should not use the medication.
Cautions
- Before you are prescribed Baqsimi, talk to your doctor:
- About all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- About your allergies
- About your current health conditions and past medical history
- About your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Patients who are in starvation mode or patients with adrenal insufficiency or chronic low blood sugar may not respond adequately to Baqsimi. If this is the case, they should be treated with glucose.
Side Effects
Nausea, headache, vomiting, upper respiratory tract infection, watery eyes, eye redness, or itchy nose, throat, and eyes are possible Baqsimi side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
